Lang Song Church

Lang Song — the Lang Song minor seminary — sits in a walled compound out in the rice fields of Tuy Phuoc, about 20 km from Quy Nhon. A seminary has stood on the site since the 1840s; the Gothic church and the two-storey colonnaded wings that enclose its courtyard are the early twentieth-century rebuild, ringed by old sao trees planted along the walls.

About Lang Song Church

Cultural & Heritage Story

A printing house was founded in the seminary grounds in 1868, destroyed in 1885 and rebuilt in 1904. It was one of the three earliest quoc ngu presses in Vietnam alongside Tan Dinh in Saigon and Ninh Phu in the north, and it ran here until about 1936 before moving into Quy Nhon. Nuoc Man, a few kilometres away, is where missionaries first worked out how to write Vietnamese in Latin script in the 1620s.

Must-Try Food in Lang Song Church

Nem chợ Huyện

Cho Huyen Fermented Pork Roll

Tuy Phuoc's own — sour fermented pork from Cho Huyen market, a few kilometres from the seminary, grilled on skewers with green banana, starfruit and rice paper.

Bánh hỏi lòng heo Diêu Trì

Rice Vermicelli Sheets with Pork

Dieu Tri, the rail town next door, is where people come for this at dawn: woven rice vermicelli under scallion oil, boiled pork offal, a bowl of clear broth.

Bánh ít lá gai

Gai Leaf Sticky Rice Cake

The cake Tuy Phuoc is known for, wrapped in banana leaf and sold in tens along the road out of the district.

Essential Travel Tips for Lang Song Church

It Is A Working Seminary

This is a religious compound, not a ticketed monument. Cover shoulders and knees, keep your voice down, and ask before photographing anyone.

Combine It With Tuy Phuoc

The church, Cho Huyen market and the Thi Nai lagoon edge are all within a short drive of each other and make one half-day rather than three trips.

The Approach Is Farm Track

The last stretch runs between paddies on a narrow lane. After heavy rain it is worth checking that a car can still get through.
